SEO or Social Media – Coming Out on Top

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) has become the standard strategy for optimizing a website for higher placement on search sites, like Google, Yahoo, etc.   We all want to be on top of the search engines, so we all want someone to “do” SEO on our site.

Social Media Optimization (SMO) is a much newer term.  It refers to promoting your website, products, and services in the social media websites such as Facebook.com, Twitter.com, Linkedin.com, Google Plus, and don’t forget the few hundred other ones out there as well. The idea is that people hang out on these social networks so you should promote your site there as well.

Which one is really better?  Do you need both?

Don’t let yourself get confused by all this.  Many of the techniques used for SEO are related to keywords and the intention is to get people to click to your website from the search engines.   The new SMO methods accomplish exactly the same thing!   When you optimize your usage of social media websites, then you will also get very good search engine results.

The way it work is that the messages you create on social networks will promote your site on social networks and search engines pick up those keywords and clicks.   You get twice the bang for your buck.  Actually even more than that!

The bonus advantage is that search engines are pushing social media results to the top.  Having a strong social media presence can actually put you above other sites in the search results.  It’s like a triple threat!

The relationships between social networks and search engines is pretty crazy right now.  The rules will probably change many times and quite often.  What you need to know is that you need to be in Facebook.com, Google Plus, Twitter.com, Linkedin.com, and Youtube.com at the very least.  You need a strategy, a consistent message, and market penetration.  Anything Internet will get you started with a social media marketing plan.
